HOW DO I GET A LICENSE
Learner drivers must pass the Driver Theory Test to get a learner permit. The test costs €35.60 and includes questions on rules of the road, risk perception, technical aspects of the car and driving behaviour.

ROAD SIGNS
Road signs in the Republic of Ireland mostly differ from the traffic signs used elsewhere in Europe. Directional signage is similar to that of the United Kingdom, but is bilingual. Distances are in kilometres, unlike in the UK where Imperial measurements are still used. Apart from directional signage, the basic prohibitory signs such as “no left turn” and “no right turn” are among the few standard signs used in the Republic of Ireland.

THEORY & DRIVING TEST
Driver testing in Ireland is carried out directly by the Road Safety Authority to a standard that complies with the EU Directive on Driving Licences.

The learner driver theory test was introduced in 2001. By law, before applying for a learner permit, candidates must complete and pass a test of their general road safety knowledge and motoring legislation. It applies to anyone applying for a first learner permit in any vehicle category.
